Obai's debut EP is out now! Stream "svnteen" here!
New R&B artist Obai has made a mark on the industry at quite a young age, but knows he has a long way to go. Though he became a legal adult on his eighteenth birthday this past September, he’s still new to the world of music and navigating his budding success. He hopes to solidify his spot in the charts with the release of his highly anticipated debut EP “svnteen.”
Obai began releasing music in 2021. While he was inspired by artists such as Bryson Tiller, Drake, and the Weeknd, he hopes to differentiate his soul pop-infused grooves with his own singer-songwriter style.
He doesn’t limit his musical influence to a handful of successful artists. Obai says he’s constantly looking for new sounds and artists to differentiate himself from the increasing number of new pop artists. Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, he enjoyed exploring the music scene and was exposed to a variety of genres. His parents played a role in his musical development as well by introducing him to the Sudanese music they grew up listening to. Obai blends his love of R&B and pop music with a diverse range of artists to create music that resonates with many listeners.
Listeners have certainly caught on, it appears. He recently signed with Geffen Records, the label under which he will be releasing his debut EP. His song “The River” was also featured in an episode of the hit series “Grey’s Anatomy.”
He approaches the creative process with reverence. “Art, in general, is a gift,” he said in a recent press conference with 1824.
He appreciates music as a medium for exploring his creative side and he’s remained humble and grateful throughout his journey in an industry that can be extremely demanding. As a child of Sudanese immigrants, he recognizes the drive and ambition it takes to succeed. Obai remembers taking trips to Sudan and feeling both grounded and motivated to create a new beginning for himself.
Despite his success, he still puts family first. “I’ve taken a lot of label trips with my mom,” he says. Not only does he want the company of family, he needs the guidance of a trusted adult before he can consider himself a self-sufficient artist. His youth is reflected in the melodies of his up-beat love ballads in which he touches on the excitement of new relationships and emerging feelings.
Though he is young, Obai is certainly an artist to watch. His new EP “svnteen” will be available on all streaming services soon.
